Manchester United FC transfer news: Red Devils consider signing Dries Mertens
Napoli forward Dries Mertens
Manchester United may trigger Napoli hotshot Dries Mertens’ release clause this summer, according to The Sun.
After poor showings from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in a 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion, manager Jose Mourinho revealed his frustration at his current options.
He said: "For 10 months I get asked 'why always [Romelu] Lukaku? Why always Lukaku? Why always this player?
"'That guy doesn't have a chance to start, the other one is on the bench'. You know why now."
And these performances seem set to force the Portuguese into the transfer market with Mertens top of his list thanks to a shock £25million release clause.
The 30-year-old Belgian has starred in Serie A since being converted to a forward towards the beginning of last season, scoring 45 goals in the last two campaigns.
And with such an affordable option, Manchester United are seemingly very keen on adding him to their ranks.
